Common Questions About Biking In New York

Q: Is biking NYC safe?

This really depends on where you are in New York City, as well as your level of confidence in riding a bicycle.

For instance, there are many neighborhoods in NYC as well as areas that have protected bike paths, mainly in Manhattan, like the Upper East Side and the West Village.

Other boroughs also have protected bike lanes in certain neighborhoods, too.

This being said, you can absolutely bike in NYC in areas that don’t have bike lanes.

Just make sure you’re comfortable on a bicycle before setting off to do this.

Q: Where can I go biking in NYC?

Anywhere you’d like!

A few of my favorite bike rides in NYC include:

  • The Hudson River Greenway (Manhattan)
  • The Roosevelt Island Greenway (Manhattan)
  • Shore Park & Parkway (Brooklyn)
  • Cunningham Park (Queens)

Q: Do you have to wear a helmet while riding a bike in New York?

Helmets are required by law for cyclists 13 years old or younger in New York, though they are still a very good idea for older cyclists, too.

Q: What are some great annual New York biking events to attend?

Throughout the year across New York State, there are numerous fun cycling events that take place.

A few to watch out for include:

  • TD Five Boro Bike Tour (NYC)
  • The New York Ride for AUTISM & disABILITIES: Bike To The Beach (NYC to Long Island)
  • Bicycle Film Festival (NYC)
  • Bike Expo New York (NYC)
  • Discover Hudson Valley Bike Ride (Hudson Valley)
