Best Time To Visit Ubud For Waterfalls

The best time to visit Ubud for waterfalls is during Bali’s dry season, between May and September.

During this time, the area experiences optimal weather conditions, with warm temperatures and minimal rainfall.

While the waterfalls in Ubud can be visited during other times of the year, the region’s wet season often brings stronger cascades and currents, leading to unsafe swimming conditions.

How To Get Around Ubud

Ubud Center is very walkable, and you’ll be able to explore on foot or via taxi or ride-hailing apps like Grab and Go-Jek; however, if you want to go further and visit the local waterfalls around Bali, a few recommendations include:

Hire a local driver

If you plan to spend the day visiting waterfalls near Ubud or enjoying a Bali day trip, I recommend hiring a private driver – which tends to be surprisingly affordable. If you’re simply going to one place and back, you can organize private rides on Booking.com.

Additionally, your hotel can likely organize this – though I highly recommend contacting Dewa, an English-speaking driver who is also an incredible local guide. His email is dgrock1140 (at) yahoo (dot) com and his WhatsApp is +62 8523 8493 089.

Book a waterfall tour from Ubud

If you’d like to book an Ubud waterfall tour, a few of the many options include a Best of Bali Waterfalls excursion or a Design Your Own Private Bali Tour. You can click here for a full list of Ubud tours.

Rent a scooter or motorbike

Renting a scooter can be a good option if you want to visit Ubud waterfalls – though I’d only recommend this if you have experience driving this type of vehicle. Please:

  • Wear a helmet
  • Make sure you’re comfortable driving in sometimes chaotic traffic
  • Check if your travel insurance covers scooter accidents
  • Ensure you have a valid international driving permit with a motorcycle endorsement

A breathtaking display of cascading waterfalls careening their way down Bali’s jungle cliffs into a natural swimming pool, Kanto Lampo Waterfall is easily one of the most stunning and unique waterfalls in Ubud and is less than a half-hour drive from the town center.

Thanks to the gentle cascades of the falls, Kanto Lampo offers one of the most tranquil swimming opportunities and allows you to sit directly under the falls for a soothing shower – as well as amazing photo opportunities.

The downside? Due to its beauty, Kanto Lampo Waterfall is also one of the most popular waterfalls in Ubud, so plan on visiting in the early morning to avoid crowds.

Arguably the most awe-inspiring and best waterfall in Ubud, Tegenungan Waterfall is also one of the most popular attractions in the area, drawing large crowds of excited tourists eager to snap a photo of this natural wonder.

Located just a 25-minute drive from Ubud Center, you’ll first hike 15 minutes from the site’s entrance. Along the way, you will pass some breathtaking viewpoints and photo spots before emerging at the foot of the 30-meter drop.

While often crowded, Tegenungan Waterfall is still one of the best sights to see in Ubud and is a great place to swim in the crystal clear waters of its natural pool.

Also known as Air Terjun Suwat, Suwat Waterfall is starting to become a more popular tourist attraction in Bali, though is still a relatively hidden waterfall in Ubud, promising far fewer crowds than similar sights in the region.

The waterfall itself is located a little ways off the nearby road, but the hike is fairly easy and passes through beautiful natural environments of bamboo forests and jungle foliage.

Eventually, the path leads to a small picturesque canyon where you’ll find the 15-meter waterfall.

The fall’s natural pool is a great place to swim, while the site’s bamboo raft serves as a fantastic spot to grab the perfect photo.

5. Leke Leke Waterfall

Leke Leke Waterfall is one of the best waterfalls near Ubud

  • Entrance Fee: IDR 50,000
  • Best Time to Visit: 7 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Swimming Allowed?: Yes
  • Time Required: 1-hour

While located slightly further from Ubud Center, Leke Leke Waterfall is one of the most picturesque falls in the area and is a great place to escape the dense tourist crowds at similar sites closer to town.

Reaching the waterfall requires a 15-minute hike from the parking lot, with the trail leading visitors through beautiful jungle landscapes.

It’s a relatively easy trek, though the trail can get muddy and slippery during the region’s wet season – so make sure to pack water shoes or hiking sandals.

Despite the journey, Leke Leke Waterfall is one of the most rewarding hidden waterfalls in Ubud and offers a gorgeous 15-meter drop surrounded by foliage-rich cliffs.

6. Pengibul Waterfall

  • Time Required: 1.5-hours

Tucked away in a picturesque canyon, Tukad Cepung is one of the best waterfalls in Bali near Ubud and experiences far less traffic. This is because it’s slightly further away than many of the other water features in the area, requiring almost an hour’s drive to reach.

From the parking lot, you’ll hike for 10 minutes through Bali’s natural landscapes before emerging at the foot of the canyon waterfall.

While the site offers a great secret swimming spot throughout the day, the best time to visit is between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., at which point the sun is in position to feed a surreal light beam into the natural pool.

8. Manuaba Waterfall

  • Entrance Fee: IDR 10,000
  • Best Time to Visit: Before 11 a.m.
  • Swimming Allowed?: Yes
  • Time Required: 1-hour

Located only a 20-minute drive from Ubud Center, Manuaba Waterfall consists of two separate falls and is still relatively unknown by tourists to Bali despite being very near to Ubud.

The first of the Manuaba Waterfalls can be accessed following a 10-minute walk down well-maintained concrete stairs leading from the parking lot; however, this waterfall is too shallow for swimming.

To reach the bigger and more exciting waterfall, you must hike a further 15 minutes along the path, which does require some natural uphill staircases. It’s worth it though to visit the powerful gushing waterfall and its refreshing natural pool, as you can see here:

Once you’re finished with your swim, you’ll exit through a canyon with thigh-high water, so make sure to wear a bathing suit or something quick-drying. You’ll come to another natural staircase, where there is another small waterfall.

Climb the stairs and exit onto the beautiful Manuaba rice fields. Here you’ll also find a small cafe with beverages, a bathroom, and beautiful views of the fields.

9. Sumampan Waterfall

  • Best Time to Visit: Between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m.
  • Swimming Allowed?: No (but you can swim in the nearby river)
  • Time Required: 1-hour

One of the best waterfalls in Ubud, Sumampan Waterfalls promises a pristine natural setting for enjoying one of the most breathtaking waterfalls in Bali.

What’s even better is that while the tourist crowds have yet to discover it, the waterfall is only a short 20-minute drive from Ubud town center and can be accessed via a short walk from the parking lot.

Sumampan Waterfall consists of a large drop from the top of a foliage-rich cliff, which in turn leads to a series of cascades that spill into a large pond and the nearby river.

While the current around the falls is too strong to swim in, the nearby river and pond offer plenty of soaking opportunities.

10. Layana Waterfall

  • Entrance Fee: Free
  • Best Time to Visit: Between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

While you won’t be able to swim around its rocky base, Layana Waterfall does sit just below the scenic deck of a locally owned restaurant, Layana Warung. Here, guests can enjoy a variety of dishes while embracing the soothing ambiance of the water cascade.

However, you don’t need to stop at the eatery to access the hiking trail that leads down to the falls, and you’re allowed to make the journey down free of charge.

While it’s slightly further away than other waterfalls on this list, Nungnung Waterfall’s remote setting about an hour from Ubud makes for an amazing hidden gem away from the typical throngs of tourists.

From the parking lot, the waterfall is about a 500-step hike through the region’s rugged jungle terrain. At the end, you’ll come to an amazing spot to take photos, relax, and swim.

If you do go for a dip, take extra caution to avoid swimming under the falls, as the high pressure can be dangerous.

Located only 20 minutes from Ubud Center, Uma Anyar Waterfall features two tiers, the first being a large drop that leads into a series of lower cascades leading into a nearby river.

The site consists of three different falls, including breathtaking cascades and a large natural pool fed by a larger plummet.

The waterfall is only a 10-minute hike from the parking lot and is a favorite destination for locals looking to escape the heat.
