How To Make Money Travel Blogging With A Tripwire Offer [Episode Transcript]
I’m often asked by the creators in the community how they can increase their travel blogging income quickly. They want to know “is travel blogging profitable even for new creators?” and “how can I monetize a travel blog?”
And while I’m not into get-rich-quick schemes, I do have an answer to this question that can really help creators grow their travel website income:
Create a tripwire funnel — one of the best strategies you can implement if want to start a travel blog and get paid. It’s a very popular strategy with those who are blogging full-time.
Now if this term is new to you, or if you’ve heard of tripwires but aren’t sure exactly how to set them up successfully, then stay tuned, as that is exactly what I’ll be going over step-by-step in this episode.
Is Travel Blogging Profitable?
Before we go in-depth on increasing your travel blogger earnings per month by setting up a tripwire, I want to make it abundantly clear that this is not a get rich quick scheme.
However, it can help you grow your travel blogger income faster than many other strategies. If you’re looking to get your blog income report numbers higher in less time, this is definitely a strategy I would suggest.
That being said, it does take hard work, as you want to make sure every step of the tripwire funnel is created with intention and offers something of quality.
And when combined with other monetization strategies like affiliate marketing for travel bloggers, publishing quality sponsored posts, writing about travel for outside publications, and running ads on your content — all smart ways to make money travel blogging — you can really make yourself a contender to be one of the top earning travel blogs.
Honestly, most successful travel bloggers diversify their revenue streams in this way, as it can bring in more money and offers financial security if one revenue stream slows down or disappears.
On that note, let’s dive deep into how to make money as a travel blogger by creating an irresistible tripwire offer.
What Is A Tripwire Funnel?
Let’s start off by defining what a tripwire is.
A tripwire is a low-cost limited-time product offer that is part of a larger funnel, which we’ll break down in this episode.
The offer can include things like courses, ebooks, printables, digital toolkits, physical products — really any product.
The offer is typically very valuable. This, combined with the fact that it’s only possible to purchase for a very short time — like, say, 15 minutes — creates a sense of urgency and encourages people to purchase.
Now, let me pause here to say this isn’t about trickery or trying to make a cheap quickly-made product seem better than it is.
It is about creating a truly high-quality irresistible product offer that helps people and also gets them used to purchasing from you so that they’re more likely to buy again from you later.
Because here is the thing with tripwires:
They aren’t your main offer. Instead, they’re warming up your audience for your main offer — giving them a taste of your style and warming them up for the future sale.
This means your tripwire should also be related to your main offer.
So, if your main offer is a course on how to travel full-time with your family in an RV, your tripwire might be an ebook on how to outfit an RV or a suite of classroom materials for roadschooling your kids.
You want to be solving the same problem for your audience every step of the way to keep your tripwire funnel cohesive.
If you’re running Facebook ads or other advertising, the money you earn from these tiny offers can help you offset that cost — though, to be honest, I’ve also earned a healthy profit on my ads using tripwires in the past, too.
By the way, in my opinion, implementing tripwires is one of the best strategies for monetizing your blog from the beginning.
Pricing Your Tripwire To Increase Your Travel Blogger Earnings
In terms of pricing your tripwire, often these offers are $1-$20 — though don’t be afraid to go higher if your offer is extremely valuable.
I’ve seen some great tripwires priced between $20-$30, and I’ve even priced certain tripwires closer to $50 in the past.
If you’re selling a physical product, you might also consider offering it for free and just having the customer pay for shipping. This would also be considered a tripwire.
Where To Place Your Tripwire Offer
Okay, so now you’re hopefully thinking about what valuable offer you can promote to your audience as a tripwire.
But, where does the tripwire actually go?
Your opt-in freebie thank you page!
For anyone who hasn’t heard of an opt-in freebie, it’s a free gift you give your audience in exchange for their email address.
It should help them solve a problem in some way. Popular opt-in freebie types include workbooks, webinars, quizzes, cheat sheets, and email courses. This guide can help you understand how to create freebies if this concept is new to you.
By the way, if you need help with webinars I’ve got a step-by-step strategy for you right here:
Now, just like how your tripwire offer should be related to your main product, so should your opt-in freebie. This way you’re solving the same problem but in different ways throughout the funnel.
Building on the previously mentioned example of helping people travel full-time with their families in an RV, your opt-in freebie might be a long-term family travel planner or a free quiz that helps people choose the perfect RV destination.
And quick note:
I love Interact Quiz Builder for building beautiful high-converting quizzes.
What You Need To Set Up Your Tripwire To Grow Your Travel Blogger Income
Okay, so before moving through an example tripwire funnel, let’s go over exactly what you’ll need to set up your tripwire:
1) Your irresistible tripwire offer
2) A relevant opt-in freebie; for instance, you might create an online library for free that contains resources that are related to your product.
3) A larger offer you’ll pitch later on — and quick note, this larger offer that I previously discussed is smart to have but is ultimately optional. I’ll discuss this more later on.
4) A landing page builder — I use Beaver Builder for my landing pages, though if you use an email marketing platform like ConvertKit you’ll also have access to beautiful landing page templates. My ConvertKit affiliate link snags you a 30-day free trial, too. No credit card required!
5) A countdown timer — this should create urgency but should also force the offer to truly disappear. The best tool for creating real limited-time offers is Deadline Funnel.
6) An email marketing software — so that you can deliver your promised freebie and continue nurturing your new subscriber
Breaking Down A Tripwire Funnel
Okay, so now let’s break down what a tripwire funnel looks like. We’ll use a new example, too. Let’s say your blog is all about empowering women to confidently travel solo.
First, you’ll promote your opt-in freebie. For our example, let’s say it’s a cheat sheet for planning a successful solo trip.
Once they enter their details to get the opt-in freebie, they’re immediately taken to a thank you page that says something like “The cheat sheet is on it’s way to your inbox! But, wait — there’s more.”
This page should have a countdown timer — we’ll set it for 15 minutes in this example — and should promote the tripwire offer.
In this case, let’s say it’s an ebook of solo travel itineraries valued at $24.99 but you’re selling it for just $4.99 as long as the purchase is made within the allotted time frame.
From there, you can continue sending valuable emails to your community and eventually pitch them your larger offer –for instance, an in-depth course that helps women confidently travel the world solo — either during a future promotion, in a storytelling email, or in an automated email sequence.
Increase Your Travel Blogging Income Through Tripwires Without A Main Offer
Now, above I mentioned that your bigger offer is optional.
The truth is, while having a larger offer you’ll eventually pitch is a smart way to increase your travel blogging income, you don’t need it to set up a tripwire.
If you want, you can simply have a juicy opt-in freebie that builds your email list and takes people to a thank you page that shares your limited-time tripwire offer.
This can be a great way to make money travel blogging — even if you’re a new blogger, since the funnel is designed to encourage readers to take action.
