Threads Tips & Tricks [Episode Transcript]

The following is a summary of the podcast episode sharing how to grow on Threads. It is transcribed as best as possible, with paraphrasing included. For the full strategy, make sure to listen to the audio or video version of the podcast above.

As bloggers, weโ€™re always looking for ways to connect with our audience. Which is why finding platforms that foster conversations can be powerful.

Enter Threads, a text-based platform launched by Meta in 2023. Itโ€™s kind of like Twitter, but with a more laid-back, less news-driven vibe.

And while it does connect with your Instagram accountโ€”which can make it easy to tap into your existing followersโ€”itโ€™s less focused on aesthetics and more on sharing thoughts, updates, and ideas.

So, how can you use this social platform to grow your visibility and income as a blogger?

That is exactly what our guest, Jen Ruiz of Jen on a Jet Plane, will be breaking down for us. Jen has been able to get millions of views on a single Threads post, have her viral content featured in notable publications like Bored Panda, and earn consistent monthly revenue through the platform’s bonus program.

Today sheโ€™ll be sharing her best tips to help you do the same.

๐ŸŽ‰ Also, don’t forget to grab access to my FREE Travel Blogger Resource Library. Get access to 55+ resources that can help turn your blog into a profitable businessโ€”including a Threads Cheat Sheet based on today’s episode!

1) Thank you so much for taking the time to share your tips! To start, can you share more about yourself, your business, and how you got into Threads?

Hi, Iโ€™m Jen Ruizโ€”a lawyer turned full-time travel blogger, author, and entrepreneur. My journey into content creation started while I was still practicing law and looking for a creative outlet. I had no idea that my little side blog would turn into something I was more passionate about than my actual career.

Seven years later, Iโ€™ve built a business that allows me to travel, write, and create content full-time.

Iโ€™ve monetized in various ways, from selling books to running social media campaigns, and most recently, Iโ€™ve found success on Threadsโ€”where Iโ€™ve had posts go viral with millions of views and earn consistent monthly income through the Threads Bonus Program.

So why Threads?

If youโ€™re new to the platform and want the Threads app explained, itโ€™s a text-based social media platform that prioritizes engagement, making it easier for posts to reach a wider audience.

Threads has a generous algorithm that helps your content reach people around the world. It reminds me of the early days of TikTok, when creators saw huge organic reach just by showing up and posting.

Unlike Instagram, where everything has to be perfectly curated, Threads allows me to share content quickly and easilyโ€”and get real visibility in return. Itโ€™s been a game-changer, and I think itโ€™s one of the best opportunities for creators right now.

2) What makes Threads unique compared to other social media platforms?

If youโ€™re wondering how to use Threads effectively, itโ€™s a text-first platform with a generous algorithm, making it easier to grow on Threads fast and reach new audiences.

Hereโ€™s what sets it apart:

The Algorithm Favors Visibility โ€“ Unlike Instagram, where discoverability is limited, Threads prioritizes organic reach, helping your posts get seenโ€”even by non-followers.

More Than Just Text โ€“ The Threads app allows mixed media, including text, images, videos, and carousels (up to 20 images at once).

Low-Effort, High-Reward โ€“ Posting on Threads doesnโ€™t require high production value like Instagram or YouTube, making it a great place to share content quickly without overthinking.

Helps Grow Your Instagram โ€“ Since Threads is directly linked to your Instagram account, followers can find you on both platforms, increasing overall visibility.

Built for Community & Engagement โ€“ Want to grow followers on Threads? Engage in real-time conversations. Unlike Instagramโ€™s one-way broadcasting style, Threads encourages two-way discussions, and your replies appear in feedsโ€”even for non-followers.

In short, Threads makes it easier than ever to grow an audience, boost engagement, and build relationshipsโ€”all with minimal effort!

3) What are some of the goals Threads can help bloggers achieve?

Threads offers organic reach, making it easier to connect with new audiences without relying on paid promotions.

Hereโ€™s how bloggers can use Threads strategically to grow their business:

Grow Your Audience & Engagement โ€“ If youโ€™re looking for how to grow on Threads fast, take advantage of its discoverabilityโ€”your content reaches people outside your follower base, making it easier to get noticed and grow quickly. Replying to posts and joining discussions boosts visibility and helps you gain followers on Threads faster than on Instagram or Facebook.

Increase Blog Traffic โ€“ Instead of just dropping a link, share valuable insights first, then follow up with a comment linking to your blog. This increases visibility and click-through rates.

Build & Monetize Your Email List โ€“ Threads is great for lead magnets like free guides or checklists. The best strategy? Start a discussion around a pain point, then introduce your freebie naturally in the comments.

Go Viral & Monetize With the Threads Bonus Program โ€“ Select U.S. creators can earn money based on post views, with some making hundreds to thousands per month. Even without the bonus, viral Threads posts can drive product sales, affiliate commissions, and brand collaborations.

Establish Brand Authority & Attract Partnerships โ€“ Early adopters have a huge opportunity to stand out. By sharing insights and engaging in conversations, you position yourself as an expert and increase your chances of landing brand deals and PR opportunities.

4) What are some things bloggers can do to optimize their Threads accounts and get set up for success?

One of the best Threads growth tips is to set up your profile strategically to grow faster and make a stronger impression.

Hereโ€™s how to get started:

Link Your Threads & Instagram Accounts โ€“ Since Threads is connected to Instagram (often called Instagram Threads), your Threads handle will match your Instagram handle, making it easier for followers to find you.

Import or Customize Your Bio โ€“ Keep it clear and value-driven so people know what you offer. Add a CTA to drive trafficโ€”or even better, grow your email list. For instance, โ€œ๐Ÿ“ฉ Get my free travel photography checklist โ†’ [your link]โ€

Tip: You get one link in your bio. If you’d like to add a few resources you can use a link in bio tool like LinkTree. Just be careful not to overwhelm your audience with too many links!

Post an Engaging First Thread โ€“ Your first post is labeled, so make it count! Example: โ€œHi, Iโ€™m [Your Name]! I help bloggers grow their audience & income. Hereโ€™s my #1 tip for getting more blog traffic โฌ‡๏ธโ€

Engage With Others Immediately โ€“ Replies appear on your profile and can get you noticed, even if you have zero followers. In fact, if you’re wondering how to grow followers on Threads, commenting can help!

Use a Mix of Content Formats โ€“ While text posts do well, adding images, carousels, and short videos boosts engagement.

Enable Notifications to Stay Active โ€“ Turn on alerts for:

  • Mentions & replies
  • Trending topics in your niche
  • Engagement on your posts.

5) What types of content perform well on Threads?

If youโ€™re wondering how to go viral on Threads, focus on engagementโ€”posts that spark discussion tend to spread the fastest.

Here are the content types that have worked well for me:

Engagement-Driven Questions & Debates โ€“ Posts that ask for opinions or reactions tend to get the most replies. Example: “Whatโ€™s a travel destination that surprised you (good or bad)?”

Surprising Observations That Get People Talking โ€“ Posts about money (like prices and tipping), first impressions of a country, or unexpected experiences often attract debate and go viral.

Cultural Comparisons & Travel Observations โ€“ Threads seems to push location-based content to people from that country, which boosts engagement. Whenever I post about a country, people from that country always show up to respond to tell me if I’m right or wrong.

Opinion-Based Posts That Invite Replies โ€“ Bold statements or hot takes encourage discussion, even if not everyone agrees.

Replies Can Get You Seen by Non-Followers โ€“ Your comments on viral posts can bring as much visibility as an original post.

Threads Resurfaces Ongoing Conversations โ€“ Unlike Instagram, Threads keeps posts alive when people keep engaging. Replying to your own thread can bring it back to the top of feeds.

6) How do you go about planning your Threads content strategy?

A smart Threads strategy makes it easy to post without overthinking, helping you grow and engage consistently.

Hereโ€™s how I approach my strategy:

Post Frequently Without Overthinking โ€“ Threads doesnโ€™t penalize frequent posting, so I share quick thoughts, observations, and insights throughout the day. Some of my best-performing posts took just seconds to write, proving that engagement matters more than perfection.

Engage With Others to Boost Visibility โ€“ Replies on Threads can get as much traction as original posts, so I make sure to engage with trending conversations. If I see a post gaining traction, I leave a thoughtful reply because my comment will now be seen by a much wider audience.

Leverage Replies to Extend Post Lifespan โ€“ Instead of letting a post fade, I reply to my own thread to keep the conversation active and boost visibility. A discussion thread about a trending topic can stay alive for days just by adding follow-ups or responding to new comments.

7) What are some things bloggers can do to help amplify the reach of their Threads posts?

To get your Threads posts seen by as many people as possible, I recommend you:

Engage With Others to Get Seen โ€“ Replies on Threads can get just as much reach as original posts, so commenting on trending discussions can put you in front of new audiences.

Post Conversation-Driven Content โ€“ Threads rewards posts that get people talking. Asking open-ended questions, sharing relatable observations, or posting hot takes encourages more replies.

Reply to Your Own Posts โ€“ Threads keeps posts alive when engagement continues. By replying to your own thread or adding follow-ups, you extend its visibility. If a post is doing well, go back and add another thought to keep the conversation going.

Stay Consistent โ€“ Posting regularly and engaging daily increases the chances of hitting the algorithm.

Cross-Promote on Instagram โ€“ Since Threads and Instagram are linked, sharing Threads posts on my Instagram Stories or feed helps drive more engagement. Click here for an example:

8) How can bloggers use Threads to connect with their audience in meaningful ways?

If you want to know how to gain followers on Threads, focus on engagement. Threads is built for conversation, making it a powerful tool for connecting with your audience in an authentic way.

But because your posts can reach a global audienceโ€”even non-followersโ€”itโ€™s important to be mindful of what you share. Hereโ€™s how to connect meaningfully while avoiding unwanted controversy:

Start Conversations That Encourage Replies โ€“ Threads rewards engagement, so ask open-ended questions that invite discussion, like โ€œWhatโ€™s the biggest challenge you face as a travel blogger?โ€

Be Mindful of Hot-Button Topics โ€“ Some discussions can bring in a flood of unexpected opinions from people who donโ€™t know you or your background. For instance, my friend posted about the price of milk being $12 per gallon near her, which led to many people attacking her on the platform.

Reply & Keep Conversations Going โ€“ Unlike Instagram, Threads resurfaces active posts, so engaging with your own content extends its reach.

Share More Than Just Your Niche โ€“ Because Threads is less curated, you can post about different aspects of your life, not just your blog. For example, I’ve found that personal postsโ€”like entrepreneurial strugglesโ€”resonate well, even though I’m in the travel niche.

Engage With Others To Grow Your Audience โ€“ Thoughtful comments on viral posts get you seen by new people. Just make sure to avoid being spammy.

9) How can bloggers use Threads to monetize their blogsโ€”either directly on the platform or indirectly?

Threads offers both direct and indirect monetization opportunities, making it a valuable tool for bloggers looking to grow their income. Hereโ€™s how:

Direct Threads monetization

Earning Through the Threads Bonus Program โ€“ Meta has introduced a Threads Bonus Program for select U.S. creators, where you get paid based on post views. Some creators earn hundreds to thousands of dollars per month just by posting engaging content.

To check eligibility, go to Instagram โ†’ Creator Tools โ†’ Bonuses to see if you have access.

Indirect Threads monetization

You can also use Threads to sell and promote your blog’s income streams. A few ideas include:

Drive Blog Traffic for Ad Revenue โ€“ More pageviews means higher earnings if you run ads on your site. Instead of dropping a link and being overly salesy, start with an engaging post and share your blog link in the comments once the post gains traction.

Sell Digital Products & Services โ€“ Promote your ebooks, courses, workshops, or templates in a way that feels natural and authentic.

Increase Affiliate Sales โ€“ Use Threads to soft-sell affiliate products by sharing genuine recommendations, which is one of the best ways to promote affiliate links.

Grow Your Email List โ€“ Use Threads to promote a freebie like a checklist or exclusive guide and turn followers into subscribers.

Offer Brand Partnerships & Sponsored Posts โ€“ While brands arenโ€™t fully investing in Threads yet, early adopters who build an audience can leverage their reach for future sponsorships. Personally, I offer Threads posts as an add-on to other packages.

10) How often should bloggers be posting on Threads?

I recommend posting on Threads as often as you can to increase your reach and your chances of having content go viral. Thereโ€™s no penalty for frequent posting.

Unlike Instagram, where content needs to be curated, Threads makes it easy to share quick thoughts without overthinking.

Post whenever you have something to say โ€“ Thereโ€™s no need to wait for the โ€œperfectโ€ post.

Use Threads as your first-stop platform โ€“ Since posting is fast and effortless, you can share ideas here before expanding them elsewhere. Some of the best-performing posts take seconds to write, and you never know what will resonate.

Use Threads to test content ideas โ€“ If something gains traction, consider repurposing it for a blog post, Instagram caption, or YouTube video.
