7 Types Of Emails That Can Boost Your Travel Blogging Income

7 Different Kinds Of Emails To Monetize Your Email List [Episode Transcript]

Recently, I shared my favorite types of emails for engaging your audience. These are the nurturing emails you should be regularly sending to your community to support and empower them.

Now, I’m going to add to this by sharing my favorite types of emails that can boost your travel blogging income and help you monetize your email list.

Remember, you want to be regularly emailing your audience so that you stay front of mind for them when they think of your niche. Personally, I email once per week — with every three or so emails aimed at nurturing my audience and every fourth or so email aimed at monetization.

Now, as we move through these different types of emails, keep in mind that you can promote your own products as well as affiliate offers, pending the affiliate allows email promotion. My own email marketing for bloggers strategy includes a mix of both.

The first email we’ll discuss is:

Profitable Email #1: Affiliate-focused strategy email.

Let’s kick things off by discussing how to promote links as an affiliate.

This is one of the easiest types of marketing emails to send, as long as you have a well-nurtured list of email subscribers and you’re continuously helping them in a specific way.

For instance, if you help families travel on an extreme budget and you promote an affiliate partner that helps people find error fares, that will likely see conversions.

If you promote an affiliate partner that sells scratch maps, sure, you may get a few because the travel interest is there, but probably not as much as the previous example.

If you promote, say, a crochet kit you love, that will just be very confusing to your list. So keep everything cohesive for the best results.

You’ll want to spend time pinpointing affiliates that would benefit your audience and that have a high payout.

I especially love recurring commission affiliates, which continue to earn you referral income for as long as your referral is a customer. For instance, many VPN’s offer recurring commission affiliate programs.

Also consider affiliates that are a really easy sell — for instance, ones that pay you for free trial signups and leads, which don’t require your email subscribers to even make a purchase.

Once you’ve pinpointed the affiliate you want to focus on, write an email that shares a strategy and makes your affiliate partner an integral piece of it. This might mean sharing “How I flew from NYC to Japan for $50” and showcasing how you use a tool like Scott’s Cheap Flights to find error fares.

Pro tip: Make sure to stay up to date on special promotions and events put on by affiliate partners. This way you can add them to your blog’s content calendar.

Profitable Email #2: Social proof email.

This is one of the transactional emails typically shared during a launch event or sales sequence — and, by the way, if you want to know how to put together a product launch roadmap to help sell your new products and existing offers, I’ve got a past episode on this.

The point of the email is to showcase testimonials, case studies, and results from your past customers. So, if you have a great review that someone left about your product, you could use that as the focus on your email.

Here is an example:

During a launch where I was promoting my Travel Blog Prosperity membership community, I sent an email with the subject line “I did it! I landed my first paying gig as a blogger!” in quotation marks, which was an excerpt from a testimonial I received from a member.

Then, the email itself said:

“Hey friend,

“You can put that email subject line down in the “things Travel Blog Prosperity members say” column. Because inside this monthly membership community full of traveling creatives with big dreams we’re all about results.

“(And, by the way, if you haven’t heard Travel Blog Prosperity is hosting a special Breakthrough Month event in January that will help you map out your year for success. Grab your seat before doors close TOMORROW!).

“Now back to those results I was talking about. 🙂

“A frustration I hear come up again and again for budding bloggers is…

“Producing MORE content, with no results…

“Sharing MORE on Instagram, with no results…

“Adding MORE affiliate links to posts, with no results…

“Travel Blog Prosperity is all about doing less to achieve more.

“It’s about focusing on *the right* tasks — vs every single task possible.

“It’s about more joy and less overwhelm.

“It’s about seeing results — as in traffic, email subscribers, and income — by taking the actions that matter in a way that feels right to you.

“Sound good?

“–> Yes, I want instant access to Travel Blog Prosperity!

“Now let me take a moment to share some member wins with you so you can start to picture just what is possible inside this nurturing community.”

And then I dove into some of the testimonials shared with me by members.

Profitable Email #3: The benefits email.

This is another of the common email types to include in a launch or sales sequence. It’s one of the most popular kinds of promotional emails.

What you’ll want to do in this email is really make the benefits and transformation of your product clear.

One way to do this is to pinpoint a pain point your audience has, and a strategy or list of tips that can help them alleviate it. This pain point should also be something that your product can further help alleviate — as you’ll end the email by letting your community know that your product is a great solution.

Let’s bring this to life with an example:

Recently I was promoting a bundle of products meant to help bloggers increase their income. I was both a contributor to the bundle and an affiliate of the bundle.

One email I sent during this promotion had the subject line, “5 ways to grow your blog while working less.” The email started like this:

“Why did you get into blogging? Be honest. Maybe it was to travel more or to spend more time with loved ones. Possibly you liked the idea of being your own boss and getting paid to be creative. Or maybe it was a passion for writing.

“What I’m guessing was *not* a motivator = spending endless hours hunched over your laptop, though I realize this is what ultimately happens to so many bloggers. To help combat this problem, I’m sharing some of my favorite tips for spending *less* time on your laptop — while still growing your blogging business. <– Because let’s be real, even if you’re sitting by a hotel pool it’s still better to be swimming in the water than staring at a screen. 😉

“I’ll also be sharing additional details about the Brave At Business Bundle — a collection of 40+ courses, ebooks, templates, memberships, and bonuses worth over $6600 being sold for just $97 — at the bottom of this email.

“I’m a contributor to and an affiliate of the bundle, and I’m really excited to share it with you. 🙂

“On that note, let’s dive into the time-saving, business-growing tips.”

Profitable Email #4: The personal story email.

This is another email I love to send during a launch or sales promotion. It utilizes email storytelling to help create a connection between you and your community as well as paint a picture showing how the product you’re promoting can benefit them.

To make this clearer, here is an example of a promotional email I sent while promoting the Genius Blogger’s Toolkit product bundle as a contributor and affiliate.

It shared a personal story and had the email subject line “How my blog has evolved.”

Here is an excerpt:

“True story: I was so obsessed with travel during college, I went for a Master’s Degree to buy time until I had to enter the “real” world.

“Toward the end of college, I dreaded graduation; simply because it meant the end of summers backpacking Europe and extended trips exploring the gorgeous landscape of South America.

“While loved ones talked excitedly about my future working at a Manhattan PR firm, I would lock myself in my room frantically searching Google for alternatives to the 9-to-5 grind. Which is when I stumbled upon a little something called travel blogging; normal non-celebrity people making a living off of their trips.

“Keep in mind, this was back in 2011, before blogging was even really a thing. Needless to say, it was a scary and uncertain path.

“But, fast forward to today, it all worked out in the end. More than worked out; I’m living my best life, on my own terms.

“Now I’m not going to lie and say it’s easy to turn a blog into a sustainable business; heck, I struggled A LOT in those early days. That being said, it is 100% possible, especially when you have mentors to learn from and who can support you.

“In fact, when people ask me how I was able to take my blog full-time in just a year, my answer is simple: I invested in learning. I purchased blogging courses and e-books. I went to meetups and networked. I connected with those who had already done what I was trying to do.

“And it worked. Blogging has totally transformed my life; mainly because I enjoy the work and I have power over my schedule, instead of the other way around.

“And it can transform yours too, friend. This is why I’m SO excited to be sharing the Genius Blogger’s Toolkit with you. This toolkit includes literally *everything* you need to turn your blog into a profitable, sustainable business — and costs just $97.

“To put that into perspective, the first course I ever purchased, which only covered blog setup, cost me $299. Oh, and that course I bought on Instagram growth? $349. The one on Facebook Ads? $500!

“I’ve easily spent thousands of dollars on my blogging education over the years, and I don’t regret a penny of it because it has helped me get to where I am today.

“That being said, if you can get all that education — and more — for less than $100, you really should jump on it.”

Profitable Email #5: The value stack email.

Yet another popular email to send during a launch or sales sequence.

The goal of this email is really to make it clear that the value of the product is worth more than the actual cost.

For instance, when I promote limited-time product bundles that include numerous courses, ebooks, and digital resources, I often choose three-to-five products that are worth more than the cost of the bundle to highlight.

I’ll also note their value.

From there, I’ll also quickly mention some of the other products in the bundle and note their values, and remind readers about any bonuses.

If there is a money-back guarantee, I’ll also make that clear, as well.

Here is an excerpt from a value stack email I sent out while promoting the 2020 Genius Blogger’s Toolkit. The subject line was “Create & launch a product with ease”:

“One of the best decisions I’ve ever made for my blogging business has been creating and selling products. It’s also one of the smartest ways to earn a sustainable income — while also helping your community.

“The thing is, understanding how to properly launch a product, at least in a way that brings in revenue, can be confusing.

“Enter the *Create Your Digital Product Launch Plan* — one of my favorite courses within the 2020 Genius Blogger’s Toolkit, which is currently on sale for a limited time. Note that I’m a user of, contributor to, and affiliate of the Toolkit, which I truly think you’ll LOVE!

“In the course, creator Kayleigh Hannon walks you through an 8-week launch plan, holding your hand and telling you exactly what you need to do to see success. And to really help you put learning into practice, the course includes a powerful implementation workbook as well as a launch template that you can save to your own Asana or Trello.

“Oh, and want to hear something wild? This powerful course typically sells for $297 — but you can snag it as part of the Genius Blogger’s Toolkit for just $97. Along with other courses, ebooks, printables, and resources, too. 🙂

“In fact, if you’re feeling like you’d love to launch a product, but you want to spend time building up your audience first, courses like the Profitable Facebook Group Workshop ($97 value!), SEO Jumpstart ($197 value!), and The Hot (Email) List ($297 value!) can help.

“Looking for additional support when it comes to product creation or blog monetization? Then check out powerful resources like 100 Ways To Make Money Blogging ($97 value!), the Zero To Superhero Affiliate Marketing Training Bundle ($57 value!), Course Crush Quick Start ($97 value!), and How To Make Money As An Influencer ($397 value!).

“Basically, whether you’re looking to launch your blog, get set up legally, grow your email list, skyrocket your traffic, grow a following on social media, build sustainable workflows, monetize your business, or something else, you’ll likely find resources in the Toolkit to help.”

Note that even if you’re not promoting a product bundle you can still make this work.

For instance, maybe you sell an online course that also includes a number of bonuses.

Or, maybe there is a feature of your product that is typically more expensive when purchased on its own.

For instance, my Travel Blog Prosperity members get live Q&A coaching calls included with their membership.

Typically I charge $250/hour for a one-hour live call, but it’s included with the membership, which is something I like to highlight.

Profitable Email #6: Focus on bonuses.

Whether you’re sending this email during a launch or not, adding bonuses to the mix can help increase the value of your product and entice people to purchase.

There are many ways to go about this, too.

First of all, if it’s a launch, you might reward early-buyers with an early-bird bonus.

Or, maybe on the second day of the launch you announce a surprise bonus that you’re adding to the mix.

Even if it’s not a launch, you could weave this into your affiliate marketing strategy. In this case, you’d promote an affiliate partner and say something like “I’m so excited to announce that Brand XYZ is having a 48-hour flash sale where everything is 50% off! And to sweeten the deal, I’m throwing in my own special bonus to everyone who purchases through my affiliate link.”

As I’ve mentioned previously, you’ll just want to make sure your bonus solves the same problem as the product you’re promoting.

Here is an excerpt from another email I sent when promoting the Genius Blogger’s Toolkit.

In this email, I listed all of the regular bonuses being offered to everyone with the Genius Blogger’s Toolkit — and then I segued into sharing a special bonus that was for my community only. Here is what this part of the email said:

“If you purchase the Genius Blogger’s Toolkit by TONIGHT you’ll also snag one month *free* of my Travel Blog Prosperity membership community (a $49 value; new members only).

“This last bonus is something special for my community specifically and is not published anywhere else.

“Because here’s the deal: While many of the resources in this bundle offer some kind of support, I want to offer my own to ensure you’re really clear on how to put learning into practice.

“If you’re unfamiliar, Travel Blog Prosperity is an *international community* for travel + lifestyle bloggers that provides *all* the necessary tools + support they need to transform their blogs into profitable businesses — including three live coaching calls each month!”

And then from there, I shared how they could redeem this special bonus by forwarding me their Genius Blogger’s Toolkit receipt before the promotion was over.

Profitable email #7: The pre-selling email.

Now if you listened to the episode on selling online courses, you heard me talk about pre-selling, which involves promoting a product that you have outlined and planned — but haven’t totally created.

Pre-selling an online course is a fantastic way to validate it without spending months making something people may not want.

For your pre-sale, you might create a sales page sharing all of the details, or even survey your audience to share your idea, gauge their interest, and then share how to sign up with those who wanted in.

By the way, with ConvertKit — a robust email service provider — you’ll actually be able to tag your subscribers based on how they responded to your survey — which makes it really easy to send the right messaging to the right people.

Bonus:

My affiliate link gets you a 30-day free trial, no credit card required.

Another way to pre-sell a product — particularly a course — is to send an email promoting a workshop that is more budget-friendly than your larger product but solves the same problem. This way you can make money on the workshop while also validating your course topic.

Now before we close out this episode, I just want to remind everyone that this list of email types is not exhaustive.

I just wanted to give you a few ideas for what types of emails to send your audience to make money — while also helping them in some way.

If you want to see success with these emails, the keys are really to make sure you’re consistently solving the same problem that your product does through your emails, that every email adds value to their lives (yes, even sales emails), and that you stay genuine with your promotions.

If you are promoting something, make sure it’s truly something awesome and that you’re not just promoting it for the payout.

Alright, now I hope you enjoyed this episode.

I hope you feel inspired and empowered to grow your list and create valuable emails that help others while also increasing your income.
