If you are planning a holiday in the near future, why not try something different and consider Djibouti? This relatively small country lies on the east coast of Africa between Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia, and is a huge favorite with divers because its coast provides fantastic access to both the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. To help you plan your itinerary, here are the top things to do in Djibouti, Africa.

Diving

No trip to the region is complete without a diving expedition into the Red Sea. The area around Djibouti is one of the best places in the world to locate the much sought-after whale shark. While they are usually surprisingly tricky to locate considering their size, every year they visit the harbour mouth and surrounding area in Djibouti to feast on the proliferation of plankton.

Lac Assal

If you fancy a bit of sightseeing, not far from the city of Djibouti is the Lac Assal, a huge crater lake some 150m below sea level. The lake is famous as being the third lowest point on Earth, and while the desert terrain can make it a challenging experience getting there, the views and history of this UNESCO World Heritage Site make it more than worth the effort. This whole area, including the nearby Ardoukoba Volcano, is set for redevelopment in the coming years to make them completely tourist-friendly, so it is recommend you visit soon to see them in their natural states.

Marché Central

To experience the true spirit of Djibouti in all its glory, a trip to the Marché Central is a must. This vibrant market is a hub of activity day and night, and is the best place in the region to try local produce.

Djibouti. I love the name. I’ve heard it’s a pretty unique country, but HELLISHLY expensive to visit! Those I’ve chatted with say that neighbouring Eritrea is a much cheaper and equally beautiful alternative if you’re saving the pennies.
