Hostel Review: Cruz del Sur Independent Hostel, Ushuaia, Argentina

To really get the most out of your experience in Ushuaia in the Patagonia region of Argentina, it’s important to have a good homebase. Cruz del Sur Independent Hostel does just this, allowing for a comfortable yet fun stay. The accommodation is highly rated on Hostelbookers, and after staying there myself, it’s easy to see why. Location The hostel is located a block away from the supermarket, five blocks from the bus station, and a five minute walk from the town’s most popular bar: The Dublin. Moreover, when venturing out to explore the natural beauty nearby and the many top things to do in Argentina, such as visiting Tierra del Fuego National Park and Esmeralda Lagoon, the bus stops right at the hostel. Ambiance The hostel has a very homey and rustic feel, which works nicely with the outdoorsy atmosphere in Ushuaia. Most of the furniture is made of mahogany and still resembles trees and logs. I especially loved all of the maps, postcards, photographs, and other artifacts left behind by backpackers. It really made it feel like a haven for travelers. Staff The staff here are extremely nice and helpful. Whenever venturing out for the day, they guys behind the desk would make sure I had proper clothing and lunch. One morning when a staff member saw my friends and I making sandwiches with old bread they insisted we use theirs instead. Also, I found it really convenient that there was a tours desk on premises, relieving me of having to go search for a reliable travel agent. Moreover, they helped us explore the nightlife of the area by not only recommending great bars, but also coming along for the fun. Socialize The hostel features a really chill common room with a TV, long tables, and bookshelves.. Additionally, a self-catering kitchen makes it easy to save money while meeting other backpackers and cooking meals together. Everyone in the hostel eats together in the dining room, and it’s impossible not to socialize. There was also an area in the hallway with beanbag chairs, outlets, wall art, and books that many backpackers hung  out in. At night, be prepared for the staff to take you to some of the city’s best bars and nightclubs. Free Perks The most important thing to check when booking hostels is the free perks. At this hostel, you’ll not only get free linens, wifi, internet, hot showers, and the use of a luggage room, but also a delicious breakfast each morning including cereal, breads, hot beverages, and myriad spreads. Overall Impression The overall vibe of the hostel is laid-back and friendly. You’ll never feel out of your comfort zone. In fact, they ask you to not wear shoes in the room and common room, so I spent a lot of my time barefoot or in socks, which made me feel right at home. Moreover, the rooms and common areas were very warm, which was great to come back to after exploring chilly Patagonia in April. I would highly recommend booking a stay at this hostel during your trip to Ushuaia. This post was made possible by Hostelbookers
