Adventures In Petra

Cartwheeling atop “The Best Viewpoint” across from the Monastery in Petra.

While Petra is known as one of Jordan’s most important historical sites — with over 800 monuments thought to have been built by the Nabataeans as early as 7,000 to 6,500 BC — it’s also home to some worthwhile adventure activities. Hiking trails abound, while donkey rides and horse carriages are offered every two feet. In the Instagram picture shown above, I’m doing a cartwheel in an abandoned cave across from the iconic Monastery. At the top you can follow the signs to the “Best Viewpoint,” where you’ll have the chance to take in aerial views of the site as well as snap some interesting silhouette photos like the one shown above.

Petra is an amazing place = I visited there twice! Did you also get to Israel?

@Ellis- I didn’t, sadly. It’s on my bucket list though 🙂 Have you?

For many years, I lived on a kibbutz along Israel’s southern border with Jordan. In fact, Petra was only a short distance away (as the crow flies). All that time, I longed to travel into Jordan and see Petra, but this was before Israel and Jordan had signed a peace treaty.

Many years later, with Israelis allowed to visit Petra, I finally made this “bucket list” wish come true. I traveled to Petra with a friend and we had a Bedouin guide. It was incredible to see the area of my kibbutz from the Jordanian side of the border.

Petra was so fascinating that my friend and I went back again, to see the things we missed the first time. This included hiking through some of the river beds (wadis) on the Jordanian side, places we previously could only imagine. The hikes were incredible. We want to go back!

@Ellis- Wow, that’s incredible. I’m glad you finally got to visit and fulfill your wish. Did you get to see Wadi Mujib? That was another favorite of mine and I did canyoning with a local guide. Feynan was also a favorite because of the strong Bedouin culture in that area. And if you’re planning on going back keep me in the loop maybe I’ll join you! 🙂
